Anime Opening Music is Criminally Underrated

Just like a great album can be the soundtrack to a point in our lives,
great opening music is the soundtrack for any anime and sets the tone of the entire arc.
The same way that, if you are going through something difficult or traumatic,
listening to sad music will ultimately make it sadder and solidify that time in your life as tragic.
On the flip side, if you’re experiencing a raggedy or boring summer,
a good album or soundtrack will give you something about that summer to remember fondly
and improve the recollection you have about that summer.
It’s the reason your locals are still going on and on about summer ‘16 as if it was a damn movie
and not just the summer after Kanye's last viable album was released.
With this being said, you would think more emphasis would be placed on anime opening music.
Or that at least more spaces would be dedicated to anime openings
on the various fan ran YouTube channels and forum.
But there isn’t and it’s crazy and I hate it.
Anime openings slap and so do the bands that are most known for making these openings.
So I just want to take some time to acknowledge some of these bands and stan accordingly:

Asian Kung-Fu Generation: hands down the most talented and versatile of the common shonen opening bands.
They have created some of the most iconic openings in recent history.
My guys are literally Naruto’s soundtrack like,
canon, non-filler Naruto begins AND ENDS with Asian Kung-fu generation.
To do that, they literally had to stay elite songwriters for over 15 years. 15 YEARS?!
Drake couldn’t manage that shit show some respect omg

FLOW: FLOW is amazing. They’re just good.
They’ve also worked on the most popular shonen ever from “Colors” for Code Geass
to Dragon Ball Z Movie 14 to actually all of shippuden basically.
They also did this insane collab with granrodeo called “seven” for a one off seven deadly sins ending and it’s a repeat.
They deserve their flowers dammit

*sidenote: I’m aware that most of these are shonen anime bands.
I am shonen trash if you hate shonen
and don’t want to hear about shonen bands you have no taste in music
and I suggest you argue this with your mother*

There really are too many to name which is why, as you can see, I’ve abandoned the list due to being overwhelmed by the sheer number of acts and not laziness I promise. From Uverworld to Yui to Ikimono-Gatari to Sukima Switch and so and so forth. These people deserve more recognition and acclaim, if for no other reason than to get them to come to the U.S. to perform at more conventions and who would be mad at that?

  1. In recent years US tv has really given up on a quality opening theme song and that's so disappointing. THere's so much nostalgia to tap into. I gotta admit, the ending theme songs hit me harder though, something about how the music accompanies whatever intense emotions I just experienced. Ano Sora and Yellow Moon off Naruto are in my brain for life lol Gonna go listen now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
